From the Archives: Community Garden, March 1977

Mary Ellen Grimes, the Block Association’s current Corresponding Secretary, has been working to beautify our block since the very earliest days of the organization’s existence. President of the Block Association in 1977, she and others converted a vacant lot at 68th and Broadway (now the site of Tower 67) into a community garden.

Their hard work paid off, and the block was the recipient of the 1981 Mollie Parnis Dress Up Your Neighborhood Contest.

A photo from the 1977 block party, which was then called “Best of the West”.
